STORM WATER CONTROL SYSTEMS / RETENTION PONDS HELP STOP POLLUTING IN OUR COMMUNITY – PUT WASTE IN ITS PROPER PLACE An inspection of our wet ponds and sand filters on April 3, 2024 uncovered several items being dumped into the ponds and filter areas of the Mirabella storm water control systems. Our recent inspection found over a dozen plastic doggie bags full of excrement in the wet pond by the pool parking lot. Additional bags were found in the filter area below the playfield near the clubhouse. Many of you may not be familiar with these types of systems but they are very specifically designed to not only hold and control the flow of storm water but also to filter out chemicals from the water and help keep the creeks and streams in our area clean. These plastic doggie bags are especially problematic to the filter systems as they do not degrade and they clog up the drainage network of pipes and screens. If you can’t carry these bags to one of the “Doggie Stations” (there is one about 500’ from both of these areas), then just dump the “doo” into the woods without a bag. The “doo” will turn back to nature. The grass clippings gradually get into the filter soil and reduce its effectiveness. Please put your grass clippings in your Yard Waste can – it is picked up every week throughout the year. Why is this important to the community? We currently spend over $35,000 a year just on maintaining and inspecting (as required by the Town) these areas. In addition, in 2024 we will be spending over $75,000 in repairs to these areas. If we have to rebuild a whole filter, or the wet pond, we could spend even more on just one area. For 2024 alone, this work will cost each Mirabella homeowner over $400 which comes out of your HOA assessment. PLEASE DO YOUR PART TO KEEP OUR COMMUNITY CLEAN _____________________________________________ |
